Reporter Alumna To Intern At El Nuevo Herald This Fall

María Elena Vizcaíno, who served as editor-in-chief of The Reporter during the 2016-17 school year, has landed a fall internship at El Nuevo Herald.

She will cover stories in the Miami area for the Spanish publication.

Vizcaíno, a 22-year-old journalism major at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, is expected to graduate this spring. She currently serves as assistant director of enterprise at The Daily Tar Heel, the student-run newspaper at UNC Chapel Hill.

Last summer, she interned on the Orlando Sentinel’s breaking news desk. In February of 2018, she interned at the The Herald Sun in Durham, North Carolina. This summer, Vizcaíno will intern on the breaking news desk at the Dallas Morning News.

At The Reporter, Vizcaíno won first place for in-depth reporting in 2017 from the Florida College System Press Association for a story she wrote about an Honors College student killed in a murder-suicide by her father.

The Reporter is where I learned valuable skills and got to write about interesting topics,” Vizcaino said. “It’s really where I learned everything about journalism.”
