Renovations Complete At Kendall Campus Swimming Pool

After five months of renovations, the 50-meter Olympic-size competition swimming pool at Kendall Campus is open again to students, staff and the public.

“The students and staff of MDC have been waiting for a new Aquatic Center,” said Kendall Campus pool manager, Jennifer Jones.

The facility contains 500,915 gallons of water with eight deep-water lanes and a sizeable shallow-water area. The 7-foot to 16-foot deep, dive training well contains up to 301,136 gallons of water. Both of these aquatic stations are maintained by a fully updated pump room featuring the latest in filtration and chemical system managed by BECS controller. The pump room also added new heaters and chillers to maintain the ideal water temperatures for swimmers year-round.

The pool, which was built in 1971, suffered from many technical difficulties from the pump room such as: leakage, chlorine, and drainage. The biggest problem that the pool faced was that the pump room couldn’t circulate the water evenly across the pool and maintain the ideal water temperature for swimmers.

Construction began in February and cost $2 million, which included $150,000 of deferred maintenance for lights.

“I am very pleased that the pool renovation is complete, that everything is up to par and the pool should be good for another 25 years,” said Brian Stokes, Senior Director of Campus Administration at Kendall campus.

The pool and the dive training well feature two underground observation rooms with windows to view swimmers as well as three aquatic lifts for people with disabilities to assist in entering and leaving the pool.  Remote-controlled lighting towers surround the pool for nighttime activities.

A membership is required from the Aquatic Center to access the pool.
