Professor To Discuss Book: Dear Mama: Lessons on Race, Grace and the Wisdom To Overcome

Shawn Schwaner, sociology and criminal justice professor at Kendall Campus, will discuss his book Dear Mama: Lessons on Race, Grace and the Wisdom To Overcome on April 3 from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Kendall Campus’ McCarthy Auditorium, 11011 SW 104th St., Room 6120.

The book, printed in 2016, recounts Schwaner’s journey of abuse and hopelessness to the pursuit of a professional career.

“I’m going to talk about how hope can raise its head from the darkest places,” Schwaner said. “Even when social class, race, and gender inequality are present, and violence is omnipotent, there can be love, success, and happiness.”

The event, part of Kendall Campus’ Arts & Letters series, will include a Q&A session after the presentation. Students will also have the opportunity to meet Schwaner from 3 p.m to 4 p.m. in The Talking Place, in building 6.

The event is free and open to the public.
