This gem is a place many might miss. Hoagie Hut, on the corner of 110 St. and 27 Ave., provides all types of subs for a reasonable price. There is a small patio area where you can sit and enjoy your meal but with limited space, the vast majority of the guests grab their meal to go. Besides hot or cold subs, the shop offers various shakes, salads and desserts. Monday through Friday you can purchase the special sub of the day for only $5.95 which includes a bag of chips and a 20 oz. fountain drink. Look forward to their new corner dogs. There is one for each major university in South Florida including UM and FSU. Miami Dade College’s corner dog is comprised of a beef kosher frank on a fresh bun with fried egg, chopped onions, banana peppers, guava BBQ, and potato sticks. 


Kendall – Tacos & Tattoos     0.5 mi

Playful and entertaining, with just a touch of hippie. Tacos & Tattoos is full of personality, flavor, and craft beer. They do what they want while serving one of a kind tacos and burritos. The small dining area is loaded with abstract works by young artists. Their signature appetizer is called “Pantacon,” which is a large tostone topped with fried queso, your choice of protein, garnished with crunchy red cabbage and housemade sauce. What you eat here is not your everyday taco or burrito. What you see around you is as flavorful as the food itself. Everything at Tacos and Tattoos is made with style and an inviting spice.

In the heart of little Havana, El Rey de Las Fritas is dishing out classic Cuban comfort food. A Frita Sandwich comes on Cuban bread with a seasoned ground beef patty, lettuce, tomato and loaded with crispy matchstick fries for under $4. Come to this spot for home style Cuban meals like Bistec de Palomilla (steak sandwich), pork or steak plates paired with black beans and rice, and a cup of café con leche. The food is authentic and delicious. Perfect for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

The Big Cheese’s soft airy dough is made just right. The garlic rolls are also a must have. The atmosphere includes dim lights and a surprisingly large dining area. Like any good pizza place, they do deliver. Also, show them your student ID for 10% off your meal with their student discount. This place definitely lives up to its name. With big pizza pies loaded up with cheese and fresh toppings, you’re bound to satisfy the hunger of any size study group.


Wolfson – Guayabitas Eatery/Salad Oz     0.2 mi

You can expect only the freshest meals from this hole in the wall. Guayabitas Eatery formerly known as Salad Oz is a tranquil yet cheery environment. The first Tuesday of every month, starting Oct. 6, you can join a 60-minute yoga session and receive a complimentary post-yoga cup of tea for a pre-pay fee of $10 or $12 at the door; space is limited. Their self-serve salad bar is purchased by the ounce and you can also enjoy delicious sandwiches, soups, teas, smoothies, coffee and fresh baked goods. This warming restaurant also supports local artist by making their art available for purchase to customers. Guayabitas Eatery is currently in the works of obtaining a beer and wine license to add another aspect to their already hip environment.


Medical – Smart Bites      0.1 mi

How do you describe Smart Bites? It’s like taking mother nature’s bounty and combining it all into one sandwich, salad, or dessert full of bold flavors and noticeably fresh greens. As you walk in, you experience the art of urban farming. Vines and other various plant life here are revoking the real estate back from the cement set land. Sprouted grain, sweet potato, beans, and spinach are only a handful of the fresh ingredients included on the Smart Bites menu. Plus, most dishes are paired with proteins like chicken, turkey, and bacon for a balanced meal. At Smart Bites, healthy is delicious.


West – Bubble Cafe and Tea Lounge      0.2 mi

Cozy and cool, Bubble Cafe and Tea Lounge is the perfect spot for college students. The tea provides a natural source of antioxidants and the location includes free wifi. Known for their bubble teas —all of which are made with tapioca pearls— this place also offers a wide range of food options from pasta, ceviche, veggie platters paninis, salads and soups. It’s all handwritten on a chic chalkboard. There seems to be a lack of staff so the service isn’t all that attentive but it doesn’t take away from the cool ambience and delicious teas.


Hialeah – Di Piazza’s Pizzeria Italian Restaurant      0.5 mi

1412 W 49th St, Hialeah, FL 33012

Located in the middle of hectic Hialeah, this pizza shop is one of a kind. It’s nothing fancy, but makes you feel like you’re in a cozy home. It’s been around for many years, when you walk in you can see all the history of this place through pictures on the walls. This Italian restaurant has delicious garlic rolls sprinkled with fresh garlic on top. Their pizzas have a golden, crispy crust and stringy melted cheese. It’s also a family oriented place, welcoming guests of all ages.

Crystal Esparza

Crystal Esparza, 21, is a student in the School of Entertainment and Design Technology at North Campus. She will serve as A & E Editor of The Reporter during the 2014-015 school year. She is currently pursuing a bachelor of applied science degree in film, television & digital production. Esparza aspires to work as a producer in the mass media industry.
