New Kids On The Block: Jordan Llanes helped start a new co-ed volleyball club at Kendall Campus. The club, which was approved in February, currently has 10 members.

Jordan Llanes has always had a passion for volleyball.

He played the sport for four years at Southwest Miami Senior High School, winning several district and regional championships.

When he arrived at Kendall Campus this fall, Llanes, a finance major in the Honors College, was frustrated by the lack of opportunities for male volleyball players.

So he formed his own co-ed volleyball club at Kendall Campus. The club, which was approved this February, currently has 10 members (eight males and two females).

“I played volleyball in high school, it was my passion and my hobby,” Llanes, 19, said. “When I got to Miami Dade I wanted to see if I could play volleyball…but [MDC] doesn’t have anything regarding men’s volleyball, so that’s why I wanted to start it.”

The club is still working out the details. A practice schedule is pending as the club waits for approval from the athletic department to use the Kendall Campus gym. They will be using their own equipment such as nets and volleyballs.

“If you’re interested, you can show up and play. Anyone can come,” Llanes said. “Volleyball is a really big culture here in Miami.”

Llanes, who serves as the club’s president, has helped established club officers. He has spoken to several other colleges, such as the University of Miami, about the possibility of competing against their co-ed clubs.

“It’s gonna be competitive,” Llanes said. “We’re gonna go across the state and compete against other universities in tournaments.”

To be eligible, prospective players must be active Kendall Campus students in the semester they compete. Players of all skill levels will be accepted. The club’s main objective is to unite those who enjoy volleyball.

“I have a passion for the sport, just like many other students, and I wish to continue playing, growing, competing, and [making] new friends through volleyball,” Llanes said. “The club is a reason to better connect and take part [in] the Miami Dade College community.”
