Miami Dade College is set to once again host the Miami Book Fair — this time celebrating its 35th anniversary as one of the nation’s most esteemed literary festivals.
The eight-day fair will run from Nov. 11 through 18, featuring the works of hundreds of nationally and internationally recognized authors.
“We work so hard the entire year to present Miami Book Fair to our community. It’s our gift…our 35th edition…Our team works countless of hours to bring fairgoers the best of the literary world, and to experience the joy of the people who come to our events is our prime reward,” MBF’s Programs Director Lissette Mendez said.
The Book Fair will start on Nov. 11 with programming that includes author Laura Esquivel (4 p.m.), award-winning writer and editor Tina Brown (5 p.m.), Peruvian author and journalist Jaime Bayly (6 p.m.) and acclaimed author Liane Moriarty (7 p.m.) Brown and Moriarty will speak at the Chapman Conference Center in Room 3210 and Esquivel and Bayly will present at the auditorium in Room 1261.
Throughout the week, the Book Fair will host six nights of their renowned “Evenings with…” series and other special author events.
The ticketed events will include readings and discussions with a star-studded lineup that includes Lawrence Wright, Anna Quindlen, Pete Souza, April Ryan, Tayari Jones and Doris Kearns Goodwin.
The Fair will also feature former Secretary of State John Kerry on Nov. 18 6 p.m. He will be presenting his book Every Day Is Extra which tells the story of his life. Tickets to the event are free.
Another feature is the Fair’s IberoAmerican Program, which presents more than 80 international authors.
The IberoAmerican Program incorporates a wide array of talent in a series of readings and conversations on a variety of topics from children’s books to relevant cultural commentary.
On Nov. 16, one of MBF’s staple events—the Street Fair—kicks off. The Street Fair, known for its colorful tents, will take place from Nov. 16 through 18, running from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Entrance to the Street Fair is free on Nov. 16. Throughout the rest of the weekend, tickets cost $10 for attendees older than 18, $5 for attendees between the ages of 13 and 18 and older than 62, and free for children ages 12 and under. Entrance to the Street Fair is free for MDC students, faculty, and staff with valid ID.
The Street Fair will be kicked off by thousands of South Florida schoolchildren on Friday, Nov. 16., participating in a wide array of activities hosted by the Children’s Alley.
These activities include theater presentations, arts-and-crafts, storytelling and reading sessions with children’s book authors. The Fair will also feature comics and graphic novels with the addition of a new section just for kids and teens, and presentations by notable graphic novelists.
In addition, the Street Fair will highlight the works of more than 250 publishers and booksellers, as they exhibit and sell books throughout the weekend. It will also feature author presentations and panel discussions in English, Spanish and Creole, as well as book signings.
One of the highlights of the Street Fair is the Festival of Authors, hosting more than 450 authors as they read and discuss their work, including the Latin American and Hispanic authors of the IberoAmerican Authors Program.
