Miambiance Named Pacemaker Finalist

Miambiance, the student literary magazine at Kendall Campus, has been selected as an Associated Collegiate Press Pacemaker finalist.

The award  is one of the highest honors given to a college newspaper or magazine. Miambiance was selected for its Volume 25, 2015 issue. It features the work of 25 students. Andrea Somoza served as editor-in-chief of the volume.

“For the magazine to be nominated and win any awards is a personally rewarding feeling to me, as I’m sure it is to the staff and contributors,” Somoza said. A lot of work and time went into this issue, and being recognized is just a validation that when you work hard for something you care about, it will pay off in the end.”

Miambiance is dedicated to displaying work submitted by students who are enrolled in courses at Kendall Campus each year. The magazine features various types of artwork including poetry, fiction, non-fiction, photography, illustration and music. Its mission is to provide a learning environment for students to gain and use their talents to publish their works in the magazine. Miambiance also sponsors art and writing contests to encourage Miami Dade College students to participate.

“I have had more fun working as an adviser to Miambiance than I’ve had in any other position in the College,” said Marta Magellan, one of the publication’s advisor’s.”Most of all it’s because I truly get to know students on the staff well.”

Miambiance has been regularly nominated for the Pacemaker award since 2003. They won the honor in 2009.  

The Pacemaker award isn’t the only trophy that Miambiance has won. The publication, which was born in 1989, has won more than 400 national and local  awards.  

This year, Miambiance is also a  finalist for the Gold Crown Award given by the Columbia Scholastic Press Association. Winners are announced in March of 2016.   

Miambiance accepts all types of artwork: poetry, fiction, non-fiction, photography, illustration, spoken word poetry, and music from any student at Kendall Campus.The publication is accepting submissions for this year’s volume through November. For more information go to their website

Lorena Umaña

Lorena Umaña ,19, is a mass mass communications/journalism major at Kendall Campus. Umaña, a 2014 graduate of Felix Varela Senior High School, will serve as a staff writer for The Reporter during the 2015-2016 school year. She aspires to work for National Geographic or become a book editor.
