Aurelio: Rebel with a Cause Premieres at Koubek Center

The film Aurelio: Rebel with a Cause directed by Camilo Vila and narrated by actor Andy Garcia premiers March 8 at 2 p.m. at the Koubek Center, 2705 SW 3 St., at Miami Dade College.

Cuban-born and California-based music composer, Aurelio De La Vega, created more than 70 works for symphonic orchestras and chamber groups. De la Vega won prizes and honors as a 2010 Latin Grammy nominee, two Freidheim Awards of the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Cintas Foundation.

“It’s a beautiful tribute from a longtime friend, an artistic piece,” De La Vega said in a telephone interview.

The event features an orchestra piece by De La Vega performed by a Venezuelan group and a song cycle performed by the composer’s wife, Ann Marie De La Vega.

“Camilo made this film as a tribute to Aurelio, to celebrate and recognize one of the best avant-garde classical music individuals and great man,” said MDC film professor Mario Beguiristain.

The event is free and open to the public.
